EASTERN GREENLAND
AUSTRALIAN GEOGRAPHIC
A two-month film project for Australian Geographic – this assignment was the most challenging of Aaron’s career to date. Camped north of the Arctic Circle in midwinter, surrounded by Greenland's highest mountains, Aaron and an expedition of six brought adventure and an environmental cause together with adventureforchange.org (one of Aaron’s side projects with Dr Dean Miller).
“Working in largely unexplored areas, our small team traversed and captured this vast pristine landscape, stark in contrast to the few charismatic animals, humans and plants that also call it home.
With a Weatherhaven tent and four shipping containers making up our entire Arctic base, the remoteness of our location was apparent the moment we stepped out of our tiny aeroplane onto the frozen tundra. Among the most northern human inhabitants on the island of Greenland, we were truly alone.
Our project was to explore as far into the mountains and frozen fjords as anyone had ever been, including some areas which were largely unmapped. Travelling on snowmobiles, skis and foot (and the occasional helicopter), we were route planning for future expeditions and laying fuel depots to allow deeper exploration. Our project was to film the expedition as a documentary and to photograph it as a feature assignment for Australian Geographic.”
