Roof of Australia

The Australian high country is larger than the Swiss Alps. A massive alpine expanse of rugged and steep mountains, but also open rolling hills on the high plains. There is little documented about these mountains in winter, and while skiers do venture here, their stories are not widely known.

This project’s intention was to spend a month in these mountains setting up several bases to explore the farthest reaches of the western faces. Our hope was to develop an understanding of their significant place in Australia's deep history.

Retracing the steps of some of the early pioneers and traversing the Australian mainland’s highest peaks, Aaron’s imagery from this expedition encapsulates a pristine wilderness with an indescribable power, along with some world class skiing and snowboarding highlights. These images and story, also written by Aaron were published in the May/June issue of Australian Geographic 2015.
